Chattahoochee Valley Community College Announces Fall Plans

Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) has announced plans for the Fall 2020 term under the leadership and approval of the Alabama Community College System (ACCS). President Jackie Screws states that the safety of students, faculty, and staff is of utmost importance; therefore, College administrators have mapped out a plan to continue to offer most classes in an online format. A limited number of hybrid courses will be offered.

“A great deal of thought and discussion went into finalizing these plans for fall term,” said President Jackie Screws. “We strongly feel that continuing to limit in-person contact is the safest choice at this time. In the meantime, instructors have worked diligently throughout this pandemic to ensure the highest level of instruction continues and students receive the resources they need to be successful.”

As the start of the fall session draws near with classes set to begin August 19, the following is a listing of some of the highlights of measures put in place:

  • Classes will be delivered in an online and hybrid format. Hybrid means that those classes will incorporate both online and limited in-person sessions. Those students enrolled in certain health sciences classes requiring clinicals will be required to report to campus on a limited basis. Additionally, certain career and technical educational courses with hands-on labs will be required to report to campus on a limited basis as well. Labs that require some on-campus participation will also require temperature checks and wellness forms.

  • The College will follow all safety guidelines as set by the Alabama Department of Public Health, Centers for Disease Control and the Alabama Community College System.

  • Currently, everyone must wear a face mask while on campus.

  • Social distancing is being enforced.

  • Plexiglass shields have been placed around campus in necessary areas.

  • Resources such as the Learning Resource Center will re-open with limited

    access (students only). Tutoring sessions and request for service are available by appointment.

College administrators stress that this time of the pandemic can be a great opportunity for students, especially in the field of workforce development and health sciences. With millions of people out of work in the United States, CVCC could easily be the catalyst to help prepare people locally for jobs in high demand. 
 
“We know that times of uncertainty are also times of opportunity,” said Dr. Chantae Calhoun, Dean of Instruction. “CVCC specializes in career-oriented programs designed to get people to work, and depending on the program, potential employees can complete certain programs quickly – sometimes within a matter of weeks.”
 
Calhoun says now is the opportune time to take advantage of the career technical opportunities in welding, HVAC, industrial maintenance and automotive manufacturing. Additionally, essential workers in the field of healthcare and public safety are at an unprecedented high level of demand.
“Chattahoochee Valley Community College offers state-of-the-art, accredited health science and public safety programs,” said Calhoun. “Many CVCC graduates are currently working on the frontlines in this pandemic, and we couldn’t be more proud of them.”
 
According to College officials, students are also saving a great deal of money in making the choice to attend CVCC compared to a four-year university, especially during this time in history.
“If you are a recent high school graduate or a college student who is staying home because of COVID, you may want to consider an option closer to home,” said Dr. Tim Harrison, Dean of Students and College Services. “Most classes easily transfer to a four-year university, and the cost of tuition is $164 per credit hour, one of the lowest tuition rates in the region.”
