Boy Scouts Host “Scouting for Food” Drive During Pandemic
Monday, September 28th, 2020
A Scout is Helpful, the third point of the Scout Law, is exactly the reason why local Scouts from the Chattahoochee Council, Boy Scouts of America took to the streets of their neighborhoods in August. Armed with grocery bags and fliers, their goal was to collect food to support the local food bank Feeding the Valley Food Bank and help others that may be less fortunate than themselves. Scouts donned their BSA uniforms and masks and set out with intentions of making as much of an impact as they could.
The Scout Slogan reminds our Scouts to “do a good turn daily.” Encouraged to help our community, our Scouts and volunteers eagerly participated in the local Boy Scouts’ food drive. The Chattahoochee Council, Boy Scouts of America planned and hosted a food drive to benefit the residents of our community. “During this challenging time for many of us, our Scouts stand ready to help our community move forward” says Juan Osorio, Scout Executive and CEO of the Chattahoochee Council Boy Scouts.
The local Boy Scouts saw the need to help our local pantries and stepped up to make a difference. With the partnership of JTM Piggly Wiggly, food donation boxes were dropped off at local Piggly Wiggly grocery stores. Scouts also went door-to-door in their own neighborhoods, dropping off bags and fliers, asking local residents to make food donations and place them on their doorsteps. The next weekend, they set out in droves to pick up these donations and brought in a total of 2,250 pounds of food to Feeding the Valley! Carleen Frokjer from Feeding the Valley Food Bank says “now more than ever, many more families are facing hardships and we are serving people who have never needed our assistance before. Food drives are essential to us as a way to acquire more food for our programs.
We are grateful for the Boy Scouts and other organizations that support our mission and go above and beyond to serve the community.”
Our Scouts look forward to another Scouting for Food drive, scheduled for February of 2021. February is known as “Founder’s Month” as it was then in 1910 that the Boy Scouts of America was founded. The Scouts of the Chattahoochee Council will continue to do their best, to help others at all times.
