Friday, October 9th, 2020
The United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley is excited to announce our newest strategy, Community Schools United. Community Schools United focuses on the whole child by providing academic support, social emotional learning, health and wellness, family and community engagement and a safe and supportive climate. This strategy will launch at Dorothy Height Elementary as the first school for full-service implementation.
“Community Schools United gets to the heart of everything we want to accomplish in community. It builds long-term partnerships between system-level partners, and individuals and organizations at the grassroots,” said United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley President and CEO, Ben Moser. “It engages philanthropists strategically to create lasting change and, most importantly, it changes the trajectory for students and families living in poverty. The strategy is about equity of opportunity for all in our community and, if successful, it will fundamentally reorganize service delivery in our community and region. It's a big strategy, and the great challenges of our time demand bold action through equity-based solutions,” he added.
United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley has selected their first Community School Director, Pamela Romero. Pam grew up in a Community School in Harlem, New York. She has previously served as a Community School Coordinator in Maryland.
“Becoming the first Director of Community Schools United for United Way of the Chattahoochee Valley is a journey that I am incredibly excited and honored to undertake. I look forward to igniting the efforts towards creating equitable opportunities for all children within the Chattahoochee Valley. I am eager to bring the vision of the Community School strategy and United Way's mission together to remove barriers to learning and better serve our students, families, schools and communities in need,” said Romero.
Community Schools United is a model in which families and organizations partner with schools to provide opportunities and support for success. Every child deserves an opportunity to achieve their dreams and contribute to society. When basic needs are not met due to lack of resources and/or poverty in their community, children cannot do their best. Children will not be as successful if their out-of-school issues go unaddressed.
