Columbus Police Officer Named First Friday Hero
Monday, December 7th, 2020
Piedmont Columbus Regional has named Corporal Robert Greene with the Columbus Police Department the organization’s First Friday Hero for December.
Corporal Greene has been a public servant for the Columbus area for over 35 years in the professional and volunteer settings. He works in the bike patrol division of the Columbus Police Department and has been a major advocate for bicycle safety programs and pedestrian safety with the “Walk to School” program among other child safety initiatives. In his spare time, Corporal Greene serves as the Chairman of the Safe Kids Columbus Advisory Council, a local non-profit organization which focuses on keeping kids safe from preventable injuries and deaths.
At a recent bicycle helmet giveaway with Safe Kids Columbus, the group had to change its entire logistics plan three times due to uncontrollable circumstances. Corporal Greene stepped in and redesigned the event flow while also taking inventory and gathering over 600 helmets. He helped guide volunteers during the event as well as set up cones, barricades, signage, and directed traffic. His focus on safety and bicycle education helped potentially save the lives of over 300 kids through this single event.
A ceremony with Corporal Green and leadership from the hospital and Columbus police will be held at a later date to commend him for his response. His story is also featured throughout the hospital on commemorative posters and Piedmont Columbus Regional’s social media pages.
Piedmont Columbus Regional created the First Friday Hero program in mid-2016 to recognize first responders each month who have gone above and beyond the call of duty. Their line of work is often a thankless job and we want to make the community aware of our local heroes and all they do to make Columbus a better and safer place.
