Communities In Schools of Georgia, with Support from Humana Healthy Horizons, to Offer Virtual STEAM Classes to Students Beyond School Walls

Communities In Schools of Georgia (CISGA), whose mission is to empower students to achieve in school and stay on a path to a bright future, in conjunction with CampAC!, sponsored by a grant from Humana Healthy Horizons, will present a Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM)-based virtual afterschool program for students in grades kindergarten through 12.
Going beyond school walls, Communities In Schools of Georgia leverages partnerships to alleviate student needs magnified by COVID-19. Distance learning, although necessary, is revealing inequities in families without the resources to support at-home learning, and prevention measures have limited the availability of extracurricular activities and quality afterschool care in many low-income communities served by CISGA.
“Humana Healthy Horizons is proud to support Communities In Schools of Georgia, helping students throughout the state by working to break down economic and educational barriers to learning and helping to close the achievement gap for underserved youth,” said John Barger, National President of Humana Healthy Horizons.
Students enrolled in CampAC! will experience a complete, virtual STEAM program with academic, enrichment, and motivational classes. Tutoring in English language arts, math, science, and general homework help for students from kindergarten through high school is also offered by the program.
Humana Healthy Horizon’s sponsorship will provide 200 CISGA case managed students, identified as in need of additional academic support and enrichment, with four hours of virtual tutoring through mid-summer 2021. The target population for services reside in Baldwin, Ben Hill, Burke, Cobb, Dooly, Dougherty, Glynn, Hancock, Henry, Laurens, Muscogee, Troup, and Washington counties.
