CVCC Basketball on a Winning Streak
Wednesday, February 10th, 2021
The Chattahoochee Valley Community College Pirate Men’s Basketball team has started the season on a 4-game winning streak. The team’s overall 4-0 record includes two conference wins. Although the season looks a lot different than usual with no fans allowed in the stands, Coach Benjamin Hicks says the team is doing all it can to keep the energy going.
“As a team, we understand that fan engagement and support is critical for any game,” he said. “As we have moved to a more exclusive environment, the team has depended on one another heavily for motivation. We have continued to remain focused and driven throughout each game.”
That kind of focus has earned the team the title of having the number one defense in the conference and the number seven defense in the country according to National Junior College Athletic Association. The Pirates latest win was against Bishop State with a final score of 71 – 50. Ellis Lee, Wisdom Uboh, Jhaquez Anderson, Micah Banks, and Tyler Willoughby all lead in scoring.
“The season is going well,” Hicks said with excitement. “The sophomores have shown great leadership on and off the court; the team is well balanced and has what it takes to have a successful season. Everyone approaches practice daily with a winning mentality and knows their role on the team.”
The Lady Pirates basketball team is one to watch as well this season. The ladies hold a 2-2 overall record with a 2-0 record in the South Division. They have their sights set on a winning a championship.
“It has been a challenge navigating through the season, but we’re grateful to be able to compete,” said Coach Ron Robinson. “We’re doing everything we possibly can to make sure we stay healthy and we can continue our season. Not being able to scrimmage any during preseason hurt us in our first two games against a top 25 team but now that we’ve gotten a few games in I expect us to go on a run and compete for a Championship.”
Both the women’s and men’s basketball teams will face Lurleen B. Wallace Community College on the road on Tuesday, February 9 at 5:30 p.m. CST (ladies) and 7:30 p.m. CST (men). They will hit the home court on Friday, February 12 at 5:30 p.m. EST (ladies) and 7:30 p.m. EST (men). Pirate fans have the opportunity to watch Pirate basketball home games live or in re-play at youtube.com/beamtv. The same opportunity will be available soon to Pirate baseball and softball fans in the coming weeks.
