Columbus’ Jobs Rate Decreases in April

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Columbus saw a decrease in the unemployment rate for April.

“We had another strong month in April,” said Commissioner of Labor Mark Butler. “We saw the unemployment rate decrease in almost every MSA, along with an over the month and over the year decrease in initial claims for every MSA.”   

In Columbus, the unemployment rate decreased by 0.4 percentage points in April, reaching 4.1 percent. A year ago, the rate was 11.9 percent.

The labor force decreased in Columbus by 503 and ended the month with 122,509. That number is up 1,901 when compared to April of 2020.

Columbus finished the month with 117,430 employed residents.  That number decreased by three over the month and is up by 11,136 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Columbus ended April with 116,600 jobs. That number decreased by 800 from March to April and increased by 5,900 when compared to this time last year.

The number of unemployment claims went down by 22 percent in Columbus. When compared to last April, claims were down by about 89 percent.

Employ Georgia, the GDOL’s online job listing service at employgeorgia.com showed about 3,647 active job postings in metro Columbus for April.
