Here are some findings:

• Georgia has the lowest ratio of caregivers to residents in the entire country, with only 7.1 caregivers for every 100,000 residents.

• Louisiana is facing the overall worst caregiver conditions, in part due to having the nation's lowest average hourly pay of $10.60.

• New York state is the best prepared, offering almost 30 caregivers for every 1,000 residents. 

• 20 million seniors and people with disabilities require long-term support and most prefer to be at home.

• Approximately 800,000 older Americans needing subsidized care are on waiting lists because of the lack of available care workers.

The United States is racing toward a severe caregiver shortage with expectations that the issue will continue through 2028. The COVID-19 pandemic exacerbated this problem. Here we will statistically examine how all 50 states are handling the caregiver crisis, how this issue came about and the complex reasons it’s continuing to grow.
