Staff Report

Tuesday, April 19th, 2022

The Youth Orchestra of Greater Columbus (YOGC) will end their 28th season performing with world-renowned electric violinist and founding member of the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Mark Wood, in a Rock-N-Roll with the Symphony concert on Tuesday, April 26th at the Rainey-McCullers School of the Arts Theater. Featuring a string orchestra and the Chattahoochee Valley’s only youth symphony orchestra, the concert begins at 7:30pm. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at www.yogc.org.

The String Orchestra and Youth Orchestra will combine to perform rock-n-roll favorites from the 70s and 80s on stage with Mark Wood, including songs by Journey, Kansas, ACDC, Ozzy Osburne, and more! There will also be a raffle for one of Mark Wood’s signed electric violins; raffle tickets will only be sold in-person at the concert, meaning one needs to be present to win.

In addition to our wonderful guest artist, this concert will begin with the String Orchestra and Youth Orchestra each performing works by under-represented composers, meaning these composers are
categorized as either BIPOC (Black, indigenous, people of color), women, or members of the LGBTQ+ community and have been historically excluded from the canon of Western art music. The String Orchestra will be performing Carpathia by William Owens, depicting the rescue of the Titanic disaster survivors by the RMS Carpathia as well as The Wild Western Frontier by Soon Hee Newbold. The Youth Orchestra will be performingselections from the ballet suite Hiawatha written by Samuel Coleridge-Taylor.
