Columbus Sees Rise in August Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Columbus recorded an unemployment rate of 3.9 percent in August, up three-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 4.7 percent.

“As we look toward the fall, we are committed to supporting the workforce as employers search for seasonal, full-time, and part-time employees to fill vacancies in preparation for the holiday employment season,” said Commissioner Mark Butler.

The labor force decreased in Columbus by 662 and ended the month with 122,276. That number rose by 1,918 when compared to August of 2021.

Columbus finished the month with 117,555 employed residents. That number decreased by 998 over the month and rose by 2,868 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Columbus ended August with 122,000 jobs. That number went down by 200 from July to August and increased by 4,500 when compared to this time last year.

The number of unemployment claims went up by 36 percent in Columbus in August. When compared to last August, claims were down by about 14 percent.
