Columbus Sees Drop in September Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said Thursday that Columbus recorded an unemployment rate of 3.3 percent in September, down six-tenths of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 4 percent.
"We continue to see a steady rise in job creation and demand by employers to fill open positions,” said Commissioner Mark Butler. “This strong growth has led to Georgia having the fewest unemployed residents in over 20 years."
The labor force decreased in Columbus by 478 and ended the month with 121,785. That number rose by 566 when compared to September of 2021.
Columbus finished the month with 117,757 employed residents. That number increased by 234 over the month and rose by 1,333 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Columbus ended September with 121,500 jobs. That number went down by 500 from August to September and increased by 3,600 when compared to this time last year.
The number of unemployment claims went down by 52 percent in Columbus in September. When compared to last September, claims were down by about 57 percent.
