On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, twenty-two (22) outstanding Chattahoochee Valley Community College (CVCC) students were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society’s Alpha Theta Rho chapter. The ceremony recognized the academic excellence and leadership qualities of these exceptional students.
Established in 1918, Phi Theta Kappa is the international honor society for two-year colleges. It recognizes and encourages academic achievement and provides opportunities for personal and professional growth through scholarships, leadership development, and service opportunities. In 1929, the American Association of Community Colleges recognized Phi Theta Kappa as the official honor society for two-year colleges. Today, Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education, with over 3.5 million members and 1,275 chapters in the United States and other countries worldwide. To be eligible for induction, students must have completed at least 12 credit hours of college-level coursework and have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher.
The 22 students inducted into CVCC's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society are De'Ontravious Abner, Madison Beaver, Alexis Becker, Isabella Benavente, Lily Busenbark, Josslyn Carretti, Kayla Cassidy, Antonio Davis, Lamarieous Franklin, Alexis Mathis, Caty McConnell, Mary Nichols, Elsie Nyaga, Laura Ramirez, Pamela Raney, Ashley Roble, Nyah Rolle, Stavonte Thomas, Larissa Traynor, Lataga Walker, Kumeko Weilbacher, and Hannah Woods.
The induction ceremony was attended by CVCC faculty, staff, administrators, and the family and friends of the inductees. During the ceremony, the new members signed the pledge book, lit a candle, and were presented with Phi Theta Kappa's golden key emblem, a white rose, and a membership certificate.
Associate Dean Vickie Williams congratulated the inductees and offered an official welcome. "It is my pleasure to welcome you into the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and the lively fellowship of scholars it affords. I salute you for your accomplishments; I charge you to explore always for truth and to dedicate yourselves to the cultivation of the well-reasoned life, a prelude to service and honor."
CVCC's Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society members are actively involved in community service, leadership development, and other initiatives that support the college's mission. Their accomplishments and contributions are a testament to the value of academic excellence and the power of education to transform lives.
