Columbus Sees Rise in June Unemployment Rate

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Columbus recorded an unemployment rate of 3.9 percent in June, up one-tenth of a percent over the month. A year ago, the rate was 4.0 percent.

“The bedrock of a thriving economy lies in maintaining low unemployment, but equally essential is striking the right balance between job growth and a capable workforce that can meet the evolving needs of Georgia’s industries,” said Commissioner Bruce Thompson. “This well-balanced approach ensures businesses of all sizes have the talent they need to grow and succeed."

The labor force decreased in Columbus by 8 and ended the month with 124,371. That number went up by 3,544 when compared to June of 2022.

Columbus finished the month with 119,498 employed residents. That number decreased by 209 over-the-month and went up by 3,495 when compared to the same time a year ago.

Columbus ended June with 126,200 jobs. That number went up by 200 from May to June and rose by 5,700 when compared to this time last year.

In June, initial unemployment claims decreased by 20 (-4%) in Columbus. When you compare June 2023 claims to June 2022, claims were down by 97 (-18%).
