September Unemployment Rate Drops in Columbus

"Georgia reigns as the ultimate destination for business and economic opportunity," said Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson. "However, with recent workforce reductions at Geico, Yellow Freight, and other companies throughout the state, we need to be cognizant of the financial pressures creating some instability within our existing business community. In today's ever-shifting global market, we must remain vigilant and lead with innovation."
The labor force decreased in Columbus by 362 and ended the month with 124,655. That number went up by 3,260 when compared to September of 2022.
Columbus finished the month with 119,999 employed residents. That number increased by 154 over-the-month and rose by 2,769 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Columbus ended September with 126,100 jobs. That number decreased by 400 from August to September and rose by 3,300 when compared to this time last year.
In September initial unemployment claims decreased by 131 (-25%) in Columbus. When you compare September 2023 claims to September 2022, claims were down by 5 (-1%).
