After over three decades of committed, compassionate service, Dr. William “Bobby” McGowan, a highly esteemed clinician at the Pastoral Institute is set to retire having left an indelible mark on the Columbus community.
Dr. McGowan began his career in mental health in 1986 as a psychology intern at the Bradley Center. Subsequently, as a licensed psychologist, he served at the Pastoral Institute for 29 years. Throughout those years Dr. McGowan provided empathetic support, guidance and expertise. His unwavering dedication to the counseling profession has positively impacted the lives of many, making a substantial contribution to the overall health and well-being of our community.
Dr. McGowan has made remarkable strides in the field of psychotherapy, he skillfully navigated the complexities of individual counseling, couples’ dynamics and family systems with care tailored to meet the diverse needs. However, this commitment to excellence extends beyond direct client care. As an active member of the Pastoral Institute’s Case Management program and Clinical Oversight Committee, Dr. McGowan was dedicated to ensuring the highest standards of clinical practice and review. He embodies the essence of comprehensive and compassionate psychotherapy, setting a standard for excellence in the field.
“McGowan’s impact extends beyond the counseling room. Bobby’s quiet presence and ability to listen, interpret, and encourage his clients towards their goals is unmatched. The Pastoral Institute will miss his presence and gifts, a deep understanding of the human experience. His legacy of mentoring newer, less experienced therapists has allowed others to learn and grow in their own professional goals,” said Laura Cardin, Executive Director/CEO at the Pastoral Institute. “We are profoundly grateful for Bobby’s exceptional service and the positive influence he has had in the greater Columbus area.”
Reflecting on his retirement, Dr. McGowan expressed gratitude, stating, “I am extremely grateful for what God has taught me through the courageous people who have walked through the doors of the Pastoral Institute. I am also thankful for my colleagues and supportive staff members who have faithfully cared for our clients. The Pastoral Institute has become a safe place of hope for so many. It has been my privilege to be part of clients’ stories of healing and reconciliation.”
As Bobby embarks on a well-deserved retirement, we express profound appreciation for his steadfast dedication and extend heartfelt wishes for a future abundant with joy and fulfillment. Dr. McGowan will be greatly missed, and his legacy will undoubtedly inspire us for years to come.
