Columbus Unemployment Rate Drops for the New Year

Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson said Thursday that Columbus recorded an unemployment rate of 3.3 percent in December, down one-tenth from the previous month. A year ago, the rate was 3.3 percent.

"As existing businesses scale new heights and a steady influx of new enterprises proudly choose Georgia as their home, the Peach State appears headed toward continued economic success.”
The labor force decreased in Columbus by 422 and ended the month with 124,142. That number went up by 2,181 when compared to December of 2022.
Columbus finished the month with 120,048 employed residents. That number decreased by 258 over-the-month and rose by 2,070 when compared to the same time a year ago.
Columbus ended December with 127,500 jobs. Job numbers were unchanged from November to December and rose by 3,200 when compared to this time last year.
In December, initial unemployment claims increased by 228 (55%) in Columbus. When you compare December 2023 claims to December 2022, claims were down by 10 (-2%).
