Columbus Airport plans to fully reconstruct one of its two runways that operate at the airport due to decades of normal wear and tear usage and storm drain issues. The airport has two asphalt runways: 6/24 is 6,997 by 150 feet (2,133 x 46 m) and 13/31 is 3,997 by 75 feet.

A geotechnical assessment along runway 6/24 included a site reconnaissance, a soil test boring and sampling evaluations of the runway that concluded to a full reconstruction which will include the removal and replacement of all asphalt and base, storm drains that run horizontally under the runway as well as a longitudinal drainage system that will be installed along the sides of the runway.

The anticipated start date for this runway project is March 2025 for a continuous 103 days costing $36.5 Million dollars in its completion. The closure of the primary runway 6-24 will suspend all commercial, large general aviation, and military operations during the construction of the project. The secondary runway (13-31) will continue to operate as normal during this project until the contractors reach the intersection in which both runways will close for approximately 7 days.

Airport Director Amber Clark states, “The typical lifespan of an asphalt runway is around forty years, as a runway approaches this age it will be assessed for reconstruction. Throughout the life of a runway preventative maintenance is conducted to extend the life of the runway as much as possible. As we have maintained the runway through regular maintenance, resealing of cracks, milling and refilling the layers over the years, it has been determined that our runway has reached its useful life and is due for reconstruction.”

The airport is a regional and public use airport in Columbus Georgia located at 3250 W. Britt David Road servicing the Muscogee, Russell and Harris County region and Ft. Moore respectively with commercial airline and general aviation service.
