Columbus Council Tackles Pension Issue: Hickey’s Appointment in Limbo

 Byron Hickey, a former police officer and recently appointed Columbus city council member, is still awaiting his swearing-in ceremony. He was appointed to the District 1seat, which was previously held by Jerry ‘Pops’ Barnes, in late May.

Councilor Glen Davis is proposing an amendment to a current ordinance that aims to address the issue of former employees receiving a pension while also collecting a salary as current city employees. Davis aims to permit Hickey or any former employee to receive both a pension and city council pay while serving. The topic was extensively discussed during the last city council meeting, spanning nearly an hour.
