THE NEW SOUTH COLUMBUS PUBLIC LIBRARY

First opened in 1992, the renovation of SCPL more than doubles the size of its original footprint to 21,000 sq. ft. The additional space provides designated areas for children, teens, and adults, allowing the many after-school students and adults who use the facility to have their own age-appropriate space. Fifty permanent computers (plus several dozen laptop computers) will be available for the public to use.

In addition, study and meeting rooms will be available for community gatherings, homework help, and more. The enhanced children’s area features a space for storytimes and a large interactive Everbright board. The new teen area includes gaming stations and computers specifically for this age group. An additional computer area is designed for parents with toddlers, allowing parents to access online services while their child plays nearby.

The renovation was initially approved by area voters in the 2015 Education Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (E-Splost). Architect for the project is a team from Hecht Burdeshaw, with Gordy Construction as the General Contractor. Additional funding for the $9.4 million project came from the Georgia Public Library Service through the Georgia General Assembly, the Muscogee County Library Foundation and other private donors.
