Columbus Reports a 4.3% Unemployment Rate for January

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that Columbus recorded an unemployment rate of 4.3 percent in January, an increase of four-tenths of a percentage point from the previous month. A year ago, the rate was 4.0 percent.

"While job growth has faced challenges this month, key industries across the state continue to offer opportunities for hardworking Georgians. Even with the rise in unemployment, our mission remains clear—helping Georgia’s workers find and keep meaningful employment in every corner of our state.”
The labor force in Columbus increased by 824, ending the month with 129,117 workers. This number represents an increase of 574 compared to January 2024.
Columbus finished the month with 123,537 employed residents. This was an increase of 226 from the previous month, and a rise of 162 compared to the same time last year.
The number of jobs in Columbus stood at 121,900 in January. This marked a decrease of 1,500 jobs from December to January, but an increase of 1,000 jobs when compared to the same time last year.
In January, initial unemployment claims increased by 921 in Columbus. When comparing January 2024 claims to January 2025, claims were up by 124, totaling 1,533.
