CSO Presents “Mostly Mozart”

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Wednesday, March 12th, 2025

The Columbus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) presents “Mostly Mozart” on March 22, 2025. Intermission includes a reception with prosecco and desserts hand-crafted by Custom Cake Studio. The concert will begin at 7:30 PM and will be performed in Legacy Hall at RiverCenter for the Performing Arts.

Music Director and Conductor, George Del Gobbo comments, “The CSO's ‘Mostly Mozart’ concert is exactly that: an evening of sparkling Mozart alongside a hauntingly beautiful piece by contemporary composer Max Richter. The music of these two -  one a giant of classical music history, the other a well-known composer alive today - compliment and complete each other. Mozart was the first composer of the classical period who was not afraid to reflect the intensity of the human spirit in his music. Ritter's work is a quiet reflection on the same subject.”

The opening piece, Max Richter’s On the Nature of Daylight, has been featured in over twenty television shows and films, including Shutter Island, Arrival, and Stranger than Fiction. Written for strings, this piece unfolds in slow, overlapping phrases, creating an atmosphere of deep reflection and poignant beauty.

Next, pianist Esther Park makes her CSO debut with a delightful performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 12 in A Major, K. 414. An award-winning pianist, Park has performed as a soloist with orchestras and in recitals across the United States as well as Asia and major European cities. Since 2022, Ms. Park has been serving as the associate professor of music and L. Rexford Whiddon Distinguished Chair in Piano at the Schwob School of Music at Columbus State University.

Following a thirty-minute intermission and reception, the CSO returns with Mozart’s Symphony No. 29 in A Major, K. 201. Composed in 1774 when Mozart was just 18, this elegant four-movement work is a striking example of his early mastery. The piece’s charm, clarity, and emotional nuance make it one of Mozart’s most beloved early symphonies.

On Saturday, March 22, the CSO will present an Open Dress Rehearsal beginning at 2:30 PM. Please note the difference from our usual start time. We encourage attendance from all members of the community, including those who are unable to attend the evening concert or are interested in a “behind-the-scenes” look into the ensemble. It is a great way to introduce young children to a live musical experience. In this informal and all-inclusive atmosphere, audience members are given the option of “paying what they want” by providing a donation or attending for free. You set the price!

To enhance the concert experience, the CSO offers a pre-concert discussion with Maestro George Del Gobbo that gives insight into the composers and works being performed called Know the Score. Know the Score occurs at 6:30 PM in Studio Theatre directly before the concert and admission is included with the purchase of a concert ticket.

Tickets can be purchased online at csoga.org/tickets or in person at the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts located at 900 Broadway, Columbus, GA. Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 5:30 PM (Broadway entrance), and Saturday 10 AM to 2 PM. The single ticket price to a Legacy Hall Series concert is $50. Student rush discounts are available in person at the RiverCenter Box Office one hour before the Legacy Hall concert starts. Senior, military, educator and student discounts are available in person or by calling 706-256-3612.
