Fall Energy Saving Tips from Georgia Power

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Thursday, November 6th, 2025

Fall temperatures have arrived and, while temperatures are comfortable, Georgia Power is encouraging customers to take proactive steps now to increase their home's energy efficiency and be ready for cold weather in the coming months. Since heating can account for up to 50% of a typical home's energy use during the colder months, even small changes can lead to significant savings.

Georgia Power works every day to deliver reliable and affordable service and, in fact, the company’s rates have remained 15% below the national average, on average, since 1990. Additionally, the Georgia Public Service Commission recently approved a plan to freeze Georgia Power’s base rates through at least the end of 2028, with the exception of storm recovery costs. This plan, paired with a focus on energy efficiency behind the customer’s meter, can bring added energy cost stability and predictability for Georgia electric customers regardless of where they live.

The company offers the following quick tips for residential customers heading into the cold winter months:

  • Change Air Filters Regularly: Clean filters help your heating system run efficiently. Replace standard filters monthly, or every three months for pleated filters. Make sure vents are clear of furniture, rugs, or drapes to allow proper airflow.

  • Check Insulation and Seal Leaks: Proper insulation in attics and walls keeps warm air in and cold air out. Weatherstripping doors and windows is a simple way to prevent drafts and reduce energy waste.

  • Think Thermostat: Keeping your thermostat at or near 68 degrees helps balance comfort and cost. Avoid turning the unit off completely, which can lead to higher energy use when reheating. Install a programmable thermostat that automatically adjusts the home's temperature settings when you are away from the house, and save up to $100 a year in energy costs, plus Georgia Power rebates up to $75.

  • Let the Sun Shine In: Open blinds and shades during the day to naturally warm your home. Close them at night to reduce heat loss through windows.
