CSO Presents “Appalachian Spring”
Monday, January 5th, 2026
The Columbus Symphony Orchestra (CSO) will perform “Appalachian Spring” on January 31, 2026. The concert will begin at 7:30 PM in the Bill Heard Theatre at the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts and is made possible through the generous support of the Bruce and Jane Steurer Family Fund.
Music Director and Conductor, George Del Gobbo comments, “Few moments in music have captured the imagination of listeners like Aaron Copland's treatment of the old Shaker hymn, "The Simple Gifts," in his ballet Appalachian Spring.” You can experience this magical moment, along with the rest of the ballet score, at the CSO's January 31 concert. The performance also includes the delightful Concerto for Two Pianos in D Minor by Francis Poulenc (performed by the Park sisters--Esther and Sun-A) and the deeply moving "Musica Celestis" by American composer Aaron Kernis.”
The evening begins with Aaron Jay Kernis’ Musica Celestis, a luminous and ethereal work that seems to float beyond the earthly realm. Its radiant, shimmering textures create an atmosphere of serene beauty, inviting listeners into a world of celestial calm and transcendent sound.
Next, acclaimed piano duo Duo Amadeae—sisters Esther Park and Sun-A Park—take the stage for Poulenc’s Concerto for Two Pianos in D Minor. Brimming with playful charm, bold contrasts, and irresistible energy, this concerto highlights the duo’s dynamic artistry and remarkable synchronicity. From its sparkling outer movements to its dreamy middle section, Poulenc’s masterpiece dazzles with personality and flair.
The program concludes with Copland’s quintessential American classic, Appalachian Spring. Filled with open harmonies, folklike melodies, and sweeping pastoral colors, this beloved work paints a portrait of hope, simplicity, and quiet strength. Its iconic “Simple Gifts” theme brings the evening to a heartfelt and uplifting close.
On Saturday, January 31, the CSO will present an Open Dress Rehearsal beginning at 12:30 PM. We encourage attendance from all members of the community, including those who are unable to attend the evening concert or are interested in a “behind-the-scenes” look into the ensemble. It is a great way to introduce young children to a live musical experience. In this informal and all-inclusive atmosphere, audience members are given the option of “paying what they want” by providing a donation or attending for free. You set the price!
To enhance the concert experience, the CSO offers a pre-concert discussion with Maestro George Del Gobbo that gives insight into the composers and works being performed, called Know the Score. Know the Score occurs at 6:30 PM in Studio Theatre directly before the concert, and admission is included with the purchase of a concert ticket.
Tickets can be purchased online at csoga.org/tickets or in person at the RiverCenter for the Performing Arts, located at 900 Broadway, Columbus, GA. Monday through Friday, 10 AM to 3:00 PM (Broadway entrance), and two hours prior to ticketed events. Single ticket prices range from $10-$42. Senior, military, educator and student discounts are available in person or by calling 706-256-3612. Children ages 4 and under are not admitted to the concert but are encouraged to attend Open Dress Rehearsals.
