The Columbus Museum Presents Monica Ikegwu: Through the Veil

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

The Columbus Museum (COMU) is proud to present Monica Ikegwu: Through the Veil, the first one-person museum-organized exhibition by Baltimore-based artist Monica Ikegwu. Created specifically for COMU, the exhibition features an entirely new body of work that expands upon the monochromatic portraiture for which the artist has become widely recognized.

The exhibition grew out of the Museum’s 2024 acquisition of Chidera (2021), a painting by Ikegwu purchased through the support of the Museum’s Alma Thomas Society. Following the enthusiastic response to the acquisition, the idea emerged to invite the artist to develop a solo exhibition for the Museum.

For Through the Veil, Ikegwu builds upon her signature single and double portraits while introducing new visual elements and themes. The paintings explore the interconnected ideas of concealment and revelation, examining how identity is shaped by what is shown, what is withheld, and what remains partially obscured.

Several works feature a painted sheer curtain that veils portions of the sitter’s face or body. This recurring motif prompts questions about visibility, security, and self-presentation. Through these carefully rendered oil portraits, Ikegwu invites viewers to reflect on the complexity of human connection, asking: How well do we really know the people in our daily lives? What do we hide from and reveal to others?

"Just like the title of the exhibition, I hope that we can move past the veil before us to truly understand the people that stand on the other side,” stated Ikegwu.

Through striking compositions and subtle symbolism, Ikegwu’s work challenges viewers to consider the layers of identity that shape personal and social interactions. The exhibition highlights the artist’s evolving practice while offering audiences a thoughtful and intimate exploration of portraiture.

Monica Ikegwu: Through the Veil underscores COMU’s ongoing commitment to presenting contemporary artists and expanding its collection through meaningful collaborations with patrons and supporters. "Over time our community has supported the work of multiple artists creating figurative work in a realistic style--from Henry Nordhausen and Bo Bartlett to Amy Sherald and Steven Tette," said Jonathan F. Walz, the exhibition curator. "The work in Monica Ikegwu: Through the Veil offers a contemporary variation on this endlessly fascinating theme. The artist's exploration of seeing and being seen is particularly relevant for a museum context."

The Museum will celebrate the exhibition with a Public Celebration on March 21 from 3–7 PM, featuring tours of the exhibition with Monica Ikegwu, hands-on art-making activities, a scavenger hunt, public performances, food trucks, and more. This free community event invites visitors of all ages to experience Monica Ikegwu: Through the Veil through interactive activities and direct engagement with the artist.
