Metro Columbus Sees Rise in January Unemployment

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Friday, April 10th, 2026

The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the seven-county Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area recorded an unemployment rate of 4.3% in January, up six-tenths over the previous month. A year ago, the rate was 4.2%. January’s increases in unemployment rates across the state reflect historical patterns as many seasonal and holiday-related positions come to an end.

“Georgia’s diversified economy is one of our greatest competitive advantages,” said Georgia Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. “That mix of industries and talent allows us to respond quickly to shifting workforce demands across sectors while continuing to expand opportunity for hardworking Georgians — a strength that helps Georgia remain a top state for business and talent.”

The labor force in Columbus was down 201 over the month and decreased by 565 over the year, totaling 129,386.

Columbus finished the month with 123,790 employed residents, down 1,066 over the month and 661 from the same month last year.

Columbus ended January with 121,300 jobs. Job numbers were down 1,700 over the month and rose by 600 from the same time last year.

In January, initial unemployment claims increased by 189 over the month and fell by 852 compared to the same month a year ago, totaling 681.
