Muscogee County Jail Design Estimates Construction Cost at More than $480 Million

Muscogee County leaders are getting a clearer picture of what a new jail will cost. The latest design calls for about 576,000 square feet, around 1,600 beds, and an estimated construction cost of more than $480 million.
The latest schematic design was presented to councilors at the Columbus City Council meeting Tuesday night. That total price tag of nearly $500 million equates to just over $300,000 per bed. The plan adds more single cells, suicide-resistant medical housing, mental health and program rooms, and extra courtroom space.
