A cyberattack targeting Columbus Water Works was quickly detected and contained last week, and officials say the city’s drinking water was never at risk.

The attack was identified almost immediately on Monday, July 27, after it affected portions of the utility’s automated monitoring systems. Operators switched from automated controls to manual operation, ensuring no impact on water quality or service.

Officials say the utility never lost control of the system.

“They did a fantastic job,” said Chance Corbett, Director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security for Columbus. “They identified the problem quickly, went to manual operations immediately, and there was zero impact to the community.”
