Major grocery store chain Kroger appears to be eyeing a long-awaited return to the Columbus area.

To kick off its potential comeback, the retailer plans to locate a store at 6770 Veterans Pkwy., according to digital construction planroom and document management provider LDI Reproprinting.

The site on Veterans Parkway is home to the final Winn-Dixie store in Columbus, which closed earlier this year after its parent company decided to exit most markets outside of Florida and south Georgia. When Winn-Dixie withdrew from those areas, it sold off many of its stores to competitors. Company officials later said a buyer had not been found for the Veterans Parkway location. Public construction site listings now show that contractor bids are currently being accepted ahead of a deadline on Monday, Aug. 10.
