The Georgia Department of Labor announced Thursday that the seven-county Columbus Metropolitan Statistical Area recorded an unemployment rate of 4.0% in July, down three-tenths of a percentage point over the month. A year ago, the rate was 4.0%.

“July brought a clear victory for Georgia: Unemployment fell in every single metro area and region,” said Labor Commissioner Bárbara Rivera Holmes. “When state leaders, local communities and Main Street businesses row in the same direction, results follow. We aren’t slowing down – our focus remains on putting Georgians to work, growing paychecks and building real opportunity in every corner of the state.”

The labor force in Columbus was down 1,285 over the month and increased by 29 over the year, totaling 129,652.

Columbus finished the month with 124,458 employed residents, down 907 over the month and up by 51 from the same month last year.

Columbus ended July with 121,600 jobs. Job numbers were down by 1,400 over the month and 1,000 from the same time last year.

In July, initial unemployment claims increased by 20 over the month and decreased by 50 compared to the same month a year ago, totaling 457. \
