Georgia Students Beat National Average on ACT for Tenth Year in a Row

Staff Report From Georgia CEO

Monday, October 19th, 2026

The Georgia Department of Education did not receive a school- and district-level score report from ACT and does not have scores at this level available to share. ACT's state-level report is available here.

For the tenth year in a row, Georgia students beat the national average on the ACT — with students in the class of 2026 recording an average composite score of 20.9, compared to 19.2 nationally.

"I'm incredibly proud of the class of 2026, who have become Georgia's tenth consecutive graduating class to beat the national average on the ACT — just as they beat the national average for public-school students on the SAT," State School Superintendent Richard Woods said. "While there is still work to be done, we continue to see the results of the refinements we've made in K-12 public education paying off in real results for students. I'm excited for what's to come for each one of these students, and for our state as we continue to focus on kids, classrooms, and common sense and provide a high-quality public education for every child."

Georgia students exceeded the national average in every individual subject area, recording their highest score in Reading:

Subject Aera       National Average     Georgia Average

English                   18.2                                  19.9

Math                      19.0                                  20.5

Reading                  19.8                                  21.8

Science                   19.4                                  21.2

Composite              19.2                                  20.9

ACT has made the Science section optional, so Science averages reflect only students who took that section; for tests taken beginning in September 2025, Science is no longer included in the Composite score.

The average composite score of 20.9 for Georgia's class of 2026 was a slight decrease compared to the class of 2025, which recorded an average composite score of 21.4. The national average composite score also declined slightly this year, dropping from 19.4 to 19.2.

The percentage of Georgia students in the class of 2026 meeting the ACT's College Readiness Benchmarks was higher than the national average in the three required subject areas, and the percentage of Georgia students who met all three benchmarks was 10 percentage points higher than the national average.

The subject with the highest percentage of Georgia students meeting benchmarks was English, followed by Reading.

College Readiness Benchmarks are scores on the ACT subject-area tests that represent the level of achievement required for students to have a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher, or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher, in corresponding, credit-bearing, first-year college courses.

All scores are based on 2026 high school graduates who took the ACT at any point during their sophomore, junior, or senior years in high school.
