Columbus is celebrating Juneteenth and the festivities are already underway. City leaders and community organizers gathered at Roundtree House to announce the lineup for the 5th Annual Citywide Juneteenth Celebration.

The month-long series of events kicked off May 31 and includes performances, community gatherings and family-friendly activities throughout the city.

Throughout June, the citywide series of free, family-friendly events includes parades, performances, job fairs and tournaments. Civic Center Director Kanise Wiggins said the celebration is about more than just a good time.

“This event celebrates our history, our heritage, and the emancipation of African Americans who were enslaved. So it’s an event that is so rich in history, and it’s so important to know where you come from,” Wiggins said.
